Great read! I agree language is powerful especially in this context. I too have bipolar disorder. To say "I am bipolar 1" begs me to ask the question: Where does my bipolar begin and my personality end? Gets philosophical quick.
Thanks Mike. Questions of identity are huge, and yes, philosophical. I just think it's defeatist and too limiting to identify as bipolar. Just a disease I have; nothing more. The fact that it often clouds my judgment still doesn't make me "it." Nor does it excuse bad decisions. Welcome to the newsletter.
Thank you sir! I can't tell you how many times I've been told over the years "It's like having diabetes." And I always hated that! The idea of having to take meds every day to simply exist in society was greatly distressing. I don't need to change, society needs to change! Was at least my thinking. Not much has changed in that regard, but over time I've come to accept a big part that makes me different. -Cheers!
